Latino Voices: LEDC’s Role in We Make Omaha

At the Latino Economic Development Council (LEDC), we believe that the future of Omaha must be shaped by all who call it home. That’s why we’re proud to be a core partner in We Make Omaha, the City of Omaha’s comprehensive plan update designed to guide growth, development, and policy decisions for the next 20 years. This initiative represents a chance to define a shared vision rooted in equity, representation, and community-driven solutions.

The comprehensive plan update process, which runs through 2026, includes community workshops, surveys, and listening sessions to gather input from residents across the city. The current plan was adopted in 1997, and the city is seeking input through the end of 2025, with the comprehensive plan being completed at the end of 2026.

LEDC’s involvement ensures that South Omaha’s Latino community - one of the city’s cultural and economic pillars - is not only heard but centered in this process. We’ve helped organize and promote community visioning workshops, facilitated Spanish-language engagement, and worked alongside nonprofit coalition partners Omaha by Design, Spark CDI, and Elevate Omaha to ensure the process is inclusive.

Through our participation, we’ve seen firsthand how vital it is for Latino voices to be present at the table. From advocating for culturally relevant public spaces like Plaza de la Raza to pushing for policies that support immigrant workers, our community brings invaluable insight into what equitable development should look like.

We encourage all Omaha residents, especially those from historically underrepresented communities, to get involved.Visit wemake.omaha.gov to learn more, take the survey, and find upcoming events. Together, we can ensure that Omaha’s future reflects the diversity, resilience, and aspirations of all its people.

At LEDC, we’re committed to building a city where every voice matters and every neighborhood thrives.
