Nebraska: Somos One
On May 22, 2025, Omaha’s South 24th Street came alive with solidarity as over 200 community members gathered for the “Stand in Solidarity” event. Organized by Omaha Together One Community (OTOC) and member organizations of the Nebraska Alliance for Thriving Communities, the rally showcased the city's unwavering support for immigrant and refugee families who have long enriched Nebraska's cultural and economic landscape.
A Unified Front for Immigrant and Refugee Communities
Plaza de la Raza, nestled in the heart of South Omaha’s vibrant South 24st St. served as the backdrop for the rally. Speakers from a diverse array of organizations, including the Nebraska AFL-CIO, Nebraska Farmers Union, and the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, shared the vital role immigrants and refugees play in bolstering the state’s economy, workforce, adn community growth.
LEDC’s Chief Executive Officer, shared her personal experiences as DACA recipient, underscoring the challenges faced by immigrants under current federal policies. Her sentiments were echoed by James Krenz of the International Council for Refugees and Immigrants, who criticized the suspension of refugee admissions and the portrayal of refugees as threats rather than contributors to society.
The Broader Impact: Immigrants and Refugees Enriching Omaha
Omaha's immigrant and refugee communities are vital contributors to the city's economic strength, cultural diversity, and social cohesion. Their influence is evident across various sectors, from bolstering the labor force to revitalizing neighborhoods and enriching the city's cultural landscape.
Economic Contributions:
Immigrants and refugees play a significant role in Nebraska's economy. According to a report by the University of Nebraska at Omaha's Office of Latino/Latin American Studies (OLLAS), foreign-born workers in Nebraska generated $22 billion in production and supported over 94,000 jobs between 2015 and 2019. In the Omaha metropolitan area alone, immigrant labor contributed $7.9 billion in production and 37,271 jobs during the same period.
These communities are particularly prominent in essential industries. For instance, immigrants account for 22.1% of manufacturing workers, 15.9% of construction workers, and 12.2% of hospitality workers in the Omaha-Council Bluffs region . Their participation is crucial in addressing labor shortages and sustaining economic growth.
Cultural and Community Enrichment
Beyond economics, immigrant and refugee communities enrich Omaha's cultural fabric. Neighborhoods like South Omaha have been revitalized through the establishment of immigrant-owned businesses, cultural centers, and community events. These areas have become vibrant hubs that celebrate diverse traditions and foster cross-cultural understanding .
Demographic Growth and Integration
Nebraska has experienced one of the highest rates of increase in immigrant and refugee populations in the country. This growth has been instrumental in countering population decline and supporting local economies. Efforts to diversify the population have attracted immigrants seeking opportunities and a welcoming environment.
The integration of these communities has been marked by high labor force participation rates and entrepreneurial endeavors. For example, refugees in Nebraska have a higher rate of entrepreneurship compared to U.S.-born residents, contributing to job creation and economic dynamism.
A Call to Action
The “Stand in Solidarity” event was more than a rally—it was a reflection of Omaha’s deep recognition that immigrant and refugee communities are essential to the city’s growth, prosperity, and cultural vibrancy. As Denise Bowyer of OTOC noted, the diverse coalition of voices gathered to challenge harmful narratives and advocate for policies that embrace Omaha’s inclusive spirit.
In a time of heightened uncertainty, Omaha reaffirms its commitment to equity and belonging—not only through words, but through action. The LEDC will continue to affirm and uplift immigrant and refugee communities by bolstering opportunities through economic opportunity, civic leadership, and cultural celebration. By standing together, the city champions a future where every resident, regardless of origin, is valued as a vital contributor to its social and economic fabric.
